This Bavarian beauty likes to sleep in her nest box most nights, but in the last few days she has also visited the nest during the day.

Last year, she laid three eggs, and all three hatched. The three chicks grew up and fledged successfully. I have left the nest location vague, for the safety of the birds.

Had to go out for a little while, and when I came back, she had laid her first egg!

More hatches today! There is a whole lot of eggshell, but Mom is very protective of her chicks:

At least three chicks have hatched. I can't tell yet whether or not the fourth egg has hatched.

All four chicks hatched at this nest. With four chicks, there is usually one smaller one, as there was in this case. Mom always made sure the little one was up front to be fed, and all four had full crops each time. Dad is an excellent provider. All four fledged successfully as far as I know.

Mom had been coming home to sleep in her nest each night for a while; then she disappeared for a number of days. She returned, and then was gone again for a number of nights.

Tonight she is back in her nest, with a very full crop.
