Rfalconcam: We are often asked why the birds are banded. Banding provides vital information to track their lives and chart changes in bird populations, including changes in range, population, and migratory behaviors. We have tracked many Rochester offspring through their bands.

Rfalconcam: Peregrine falcons are banded with 2 bands, an aluminum band on the right leg and a colored band on the left leg. The bands do not hurt the birds or impact their individual or reproductive success.

Rfalconcam: The right leg band has a unique long number assigned by the North American Bird Banding Lab, often called the USFWS band. In NY we cover that band with a colored piece of tape to make it easier to ID the bird at a distance.
