Rfalconcam: The left band is an auxiliary marker with different colors distributed by region . NY generally uses black/green with a number/letter combination that is designed to be read more easily from a distance with a spotting scope or long range camera.

Rfalconcam: The banding team measures the width of the tarsus bone-the lowest leg bone just above the toes-to determine the gender. Females have a wider tarsus than males. There have been some mis-gendered birds over the years-large male or small female-but the bands are loose enough to not be a problem.
