In the category "It's an ill wind that blows no good", ferries and trains across Europe are doing a booming business as travellers try to get the better of the no-flight situation. But the following takes British Bureaucracy a bridge too far... hysterical hysterical hysterical

Slainte!

Bobbie

From the BCC...

Man forced to cycle on to ferry

A London businessman stranded in France by the no-fly ban is back in the UK after having to buy a women's bicycle to allow him aboard a returning ferry. Thom Noble, 52, from Highgate, said operator Norfolkline had no foot passenger tickets left and would only let him on as a cyclist.
He said staff at Dunkirk even made him ride the cycle, which he bought from a second-hand shop, up the ferry's ramp.

Norfolkline was not available for comment on Saturday.

Child's bike

He said half a dozen people grounded by the volcanic ash had the same idea and boarded the boat in a wobbling parade of two-wheelers. One man, a British Airways gold card member, was riding a children's bicycle.

Mr Noble, the managing director of a marketing company, and his colleague, set off on Friday morning from Zurich in Switzerland. The trip involved six trains and three taxis just to reach the French ferry port. He said the second-hand shop had had a run on bicycles and he bought a women's bike for 49 euro (£43) while his colleague picked out a bright pink contraption with a giant basket in front.

Mr Noble said once in Dover they were forced to dump the bicycles in order to get on a bus to go to the railway station.

I lived in Oregon when Mt. St. Helen's erupted.  Like a fool, I drove my car to Portland.  Totally ruined the car.  And the ash 250 miles away in Grants Pass made living miserable.  Anyone with respiratory problems simply could not go outside.  And if you didn't have a respiratory ailment, you developed one.  Ash covered everything.

That's gorgeous! I am glad you got there before he was gone into the sea. (I love that turn of phrase!) Where do you go to take pictures?

Aafke!  I didn't realize you were that close to the water.  Yeah, water haze and junk in the sky makes great sunrise/sunset pics!  More, please?

And Bobbi, you should be getting some in Ireland, too Smiley

Yes, we are, Janet - tho not as spectacular as they are farther north in Aafke's patch. My husband Rod has a nice one from early yesterday of the sky over our house at around 5am GMT (the dog wanted to have a wander...). Of course Dumb Me has trouble posting these but if I discover how, I will forward.

I meant to say with that last post, Janet - as in Ireland, nowhere in the Netherlands is that far from the water -  haha!! (Am I right, Aafke?!) Reminds of me an old saying about the Dutch landscape, polders etc.: "God made the world but the Dutch made Holland." In case you are wondering about the intent, Aafke, that has always been seen as a hymn of praise to Dutch creativity and ingenuity... and still it continues!
