Events at the nest today: July 7th
As you will have been aware our osprey pair have not been incubating their eggs very much for a few days now.
This morning it looked like there were no eggs in the nest at all. After carefully scrutinising our 24 hour recordings we caught a very brief glimpse yesterday of one of the adult birds dropping material on top of the eggs. This was done so quickly we had to re-run the footage about six times to make sure we had observed correctly.
We therefore took the decision to send a qualified tree climbing staff member up the tree to investigate.
As we did not want to cause a lot of disturbance to the ospreys we timed our retrieval of the eggs when they were off the nest, after a bit of searching he found and retrieved the eggs from the nest.
The eggs will now be sent for analysis to see what we can find out from them. As soon as we have any definite news we will let you know.

What can they tell from the eggs? Curious, can they tell what went wrong?

This is what was posted about their findings, BC:
Good news!!!
– the eggs we retrieved from the osprey nest were fertile. Initial results from tests on the eggs have shown that the eggs definitely had started to form. This means our resident female, although an elderly osprey is still fertile. Further tests on the eggs are being carried out and we will keep you informed of anything else that is discovered. This however may take a few weeks, and still further tests will be carried out after that which could take months to get results back from.
However for now at least, we know the problem is not the age of our osprey. Who knows she may yet raise her 50th chick from the nest…!

Could be weather related like a lot of the eggs in the Uk this season and here also. It's been a rough one for sure. Hoping for better results next year. I wonder if Beauty's were the same. Thanks Chris.

Had not seen that report re the eggs, Kris - how very strange, but at least they know the eggs were fertile. Now comes the wait for next year... ohhhhh!

Update on Osprey egg examination:
All the Osprey eggs were a similar size of 60mm x 39mm and weight of 50 grams. Tests show the eggs had failed at an early stage of development, also no significant bacteria was found in the eggs. Further examination of egg contents have gone for testing and results will not be back before the autumn.

Thanks for the update Kris! I hate it when they put so much effort into incubating with no result.
