Where on Irondequoit Bay would be a good place  to watch?   Up by the outlet bridge?
At the foot of the bay by Empire?   Midpoint?   And Carol, didn't you last see Mariah up by Saint Anne's and the Medley Centre this fall?

It's a town in the county to our south about an hour away from Rochester.

Joyce, when you guys go to the bay, where do you go? I actually have only seen the bay from 104(the roadway)!

Yes Margaret.  The last time we saw Mariah and positively ID'd her was at the Medley Center (end of October, 2009) and St. Ann's (beginning of November, 2009).  During that time, many of us witnessed her flying off to the east, towards Irondequoit Bay, which is a very short flight for a Peregrine.  Not saying the Peregrine seen at Irondequoit Bay is her, but I do hope so.  That would be just way too awesome.   Cheesy

Viewing spots at Irondequoit Bay?

There are many areas around the bay that you can park.  Empire Blvd would be the best area.  I'd just drive around, find a spot, get the binocs out and keep watching.  Hmmmm, I might have to dust off the FalconWatcherScope this weekend.   happy

This is a dumb question, Carol!  Do you just keep on empire blvd until you see the bay?

I don't know how it is that I can go to nyc and not get lost but I get lost in my hometown. stupid

Here is a map link that Dawn sent me last night.  One place that Brian & KathyO mentioned is Newport Rd.

Last night I was scrolling around the Bay with the map trying to get familiar with the area.  We plan on exploring various locations this weekend.  Lou mentioned that he and Dana often go winter birding where the old Glen Edith used to be on the opposite side of the Bay from Newport.

The place that most of us watch the eagles from is at the southend near Basils Restaurant on Empire.  There is a Parking Area between Bayside Boat & Tackle and Basils.  You can clearly see it on the Satellite Map.

Joyce

P.S. NUNDA is pronounced in the typical unique Rochester locale way...NUN DAY.

Dan and Brian were out at Irondequoit Bay yesterday, but no sighting of a falcon.  More of us will be out this weekend.  Keep your talons crossed!

Watchers were out on Saturday afternoon checking for the peregrine Brian, Dan, Jeanne, Carol P, Dawn, Susan C, Larry O and me.  No sighting, but we had a good raptor watch - we saw one of the Irondequoit Eagles and a juvenile.  The female came in with a fish and flew around the tops of the trees where the nest is.  This was a first for Jeanne!

On Sunday, Dawn was given a boat ride on the Bay and checked the bridge.  She tried looking everywhere with the binocs. Nothing...and she agrees that there isn't a good spot under there for a nest.  She also looked at some of the cliffsides and didn't see anything.

We may have had single peregrine wandering by for a couple of days, and then off to a different location.  We'll continue to look for other peregrine locations.
