Wow, I can't believe it's been 6 years already since this pic was taken. Grissom, (named by Shaky), found himself in a tight situation and had to be rescued. Mike Allen, from the DEC released him and this pic has been a favorite ever since. Every time I look at this photo, it brings tears to my eyes. It's a Kodak moment, Mike will never forget. Grissom stayed on his arm for a few seconds, as if to say, "thanks Mike", then he flew off.

Wow, I can't believe it's been 7 years already since this pic was taken. Grissom, (named by Shaky)

Was Virgil "Gus" Grissom the inspiration?  When Rich and I were returning from our honeymoon many years ago, we stopped at Arlington and paid our respects to all three of the Apollo 1 astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee.  I remember listening to the news of the tragedy on my transistor radio - tuned to 77WABC in 1967.

Mike was so lucky to have "such a moment" with Grissom.
Your welcome Janet. I re-post this pic every once in a while. I just love it.

It was only 6 years ago, and yes, Grissom was named after Gus, the man who would have been the first to walk on the moon.

This is one of those magic moments between wild animal and human - where trust and mutual respect overlap for a precious moment - that has me blubbing uncontrollably.

Absolutely gorgeous story!

:wave:Thanks for sharing Donna. I love hearing all the old stories of M&K and their offspring from the watchers. Especially Mayor Dan he has some good ones. He told me this morning about Mariah stooping up on a pigeon that was sitting on the edge of a building. She flew straight up the face of the building and grabbed it. Must have been awesome to see. I feel so honored to be a watcher with all these people. It truly has turned my life in another direction. Thanks everyone and Happy Independence Day! heart

Tom Hoehn took that picture.  I'm pretty sure Mike has a nicely framed copy of it.  We were all quite surprised when Grissom hopped up on Mike's arm instead of flying off.  It was really quite a moment.

Here's my write-up of tha release event (from the days before my Peregrinations blog):
