I found it touching that a tree mattered so much to people. Very sweet

I'm surprised that the arborists aren't taking grafts. We've had two very famous trees go down in the last 10 years:
1) the last Liberty Tree at St Johns in Annapolis
2) the Wye River Oak
Both had grafts taken and in the case of the Wye River Oak, people could donate to receive a "sappling" of the Oak. A small Wye River Oak is on the point at our old marina to honor a friend that had died.

There are a lot of us who grieve the passing of every tree
I sat helplessly one day in an office, watching from the window as a bulldozer knocked down and piled up about an acre of new growth hardwoods, removed so a new hotel could be built on the site.

So touching, Carol, I think it says so much especially today as we watch so many environmental things happen. and Janet, I wrote to the environmental services dept here about your suggestion of grafts.

Hey Jeanne -
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/trees/giant.asp
Lots of phone numbers and contact info - I know they have to move like yesterday in this heat. These grand old trees deserve a little something extra. We do have arborists in Arlington County, so hollor if you hit a brick wall - I might be able to get you some magical words to say to the folks on your side. Good Luck!

Thanks so much, Janet! I sent an email but I may call tomorrow so I can actually speak to someone. I googled the arborist who was mentioned in the article but the google search says he is in syracuse. That's weird.
I will keep you posted! Thank you so much!

No, not so weird, as he might be the arborist for your corner of the state. It is a good mission you are on. I do love preserving parts of history and these ancient trees have been there since the early days of our nation. FYI, there is an ancient forest in VA and no one will release the location - a good thing!
