Spotting Of 28 Blue Whales 'Once In Decade Event'

I would call this a once in a lifetime event! A huge group of blue whales and humpback whales were observed feeding on krill in Monterey Bay. I have seen blue whales several times, but never in a pod greater than five.

I once spent a week on Monterey Bay with Nancy. We were then studying porpoises and I think we only spotted a few humpbacks on that trip.

By the way, blue whales can get up to 100 feet long and weigh 200 tons. They are the largest animals ever to have lived, bigger than the largest dinosaur.

Blue whales continue to feed off California coast

The blue whales continue to feed on the abundant krill off Southern California. There about 80 animals about a mile out from Lomg Beach and a bit north.
