I saved a seagull.

we were sitting in the grass near russell station when a seagull came flying over head, very low. something was flapping behind him. I realized it was his foot. It was hanging and really black. He landed next to us in the grass. I could almost touch him but not quite. We went and did our thing for about 5 hours. I swore that if the gull was still there when we were done I would grab him. He was still in the grass under the tree. I grabbed a jacket and threw it over him. He was completely missing one foot and the other foot looked like it was about to fall off.

I took him home for the night. He was a little upset. He bit me a few times and didn't eat much or at all but he was quite relaxed. I even was able to pet him and he seemed to enjoy it. The next day I took him to east ridge. I didn't realize dana works there so maybe she can give an update on him if she sees this

What is it with the feet???  I can't tell you how many gulls and ducks had bad or missing feet over the course of a year.  Ok, the birds like the osprey who dive into the water feet first, I can understand, but ducks??  Gulls?  Any ideas, as Nan's story is very common (we every saw one on Lake Ontario - named him Harry).

I think it must happen in the winter when they are wading in the water and it gets real cold and then they must get frost bite. That's all I can think of. This poor guy basically had no feet at all!!

Maybe that's it. I just figures it was frost bite because many times the poor things get frozen into the ice here

Maybe in open water where long-line (think the Perfect Storm) fishing is being done, but not on the Bay.  I've seen them with 1/2 beaks, 1/2 feet, etc. and amazingly, they make it!  Frost bite doesn't work because they are IN the water below the frost line (on land, yes, but not in the water).  Hmmmm.....  This is something to investigate.....

Well, here not only the comercial long lines are a problem. The lines that are left or lost by coastal sport fishers add its negative impact too.

Thanks everyone. I was hoping dana would see this and say how the seagull is doing but I guess she didn't so I think I will call them and find out.

I called and found out that he was put down. His leg with the foot dangling was broken and he was missing the other foot. The lady told me that he wouldn't be able to survive. I was kind of hoping that he could be kept in captivity there or  somewhere else. Oh well.
