I have never seen a cuckoo in the States, but I assume there are some... perhaps a number of species? Here's a good piece on their incubation...

A cuckoo has a remarkable ability to hold its egg inside it for an extra 24 hours before releasing it into a host bird's nest, researchers have found.

They say this "internal incubation" lets a cuckoo hatch before its nest mates, chuck them out and have the food foster parents bring all to itself.

Those little squatters, pretty sad for the ones that get tossed out. Good article Bobbie!

wave  Thanks Bobbie! These birds have one-up on the brown headed cowbird which also lays its eggs in other birds' nests. Simply amazing that they can hold onto their eggs like that!   clap

Yes, we have three species in the states:
Black-billed Cuckoo
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Mangrove Cuckoo (only seen on the Southern Florida Coast)

They're not always easy to photograph because they tend to like dense, dark forests, but I managed to catch a photo of a Yellow-billed cuckoo a few years back about to dive into a tent caterpillar buffet.
