I saw this handsome Sharpie in our backyard earlier this evening. I was doing the dishes and happened to look up to see it sitting on our bird feeder. I snapped off a few pictures and wanted to share.

Beautiful bird Lou....great shots. Not to change the subject and get everyone confused but where's your Wood ducks? None this year?

Donna,

We were late changing the nesting material (wood shavings) this year and because of the camera holes that were cut into the wood duck boxes last year, the insides of the boxes were wet. We had wood ducks show up early this year, but they didn't take to the boxes and nested elsewhere before we took care of the problem. We saw them frequently, feeding on the cracked corn that we put out, but no luck from a wood duck box perspective. Hopefully, they'll be back next year.

Thanks for asking!

hawk Lou, he is indeed a handsome sharpie.  He would normally be hunting birds to eat, so the squirrel was probably not in any great danger.  Thanks for the great pix. flash

It looks like the bird had just had a big meal.  Those talons are huge.  Great pictures of the big middle talon.  It is quite remarkable how comfortable sharpies are around people.  I miss my gal.  Haven't seen her since last winter, but she's around.  Nobody comes out when she's in the neighborhood.

...Or, is this a Cooper's Hawk?

I did a Google image search of both and it's hard to tell if this is a juvie Sharpie or Coop.

What do you think? Here's a collage of some of the pics:

It's a sharp shinned.  I first thought I had a Cooper's in my yard, but the big toe gives it away and the feathering above the eye is another clincher.

It's tough to tell, though.  They look very similar.  Their coloring changes during the year and by age.  But that's a sharpie.
