Yesterday Robert and I went out for a day of birdwatching. It was a great succes with thousands of geese and hundreds of Whooper Swans and a lot other birds.
At one moment we were looking over the sea for seabirds at than I saw a big dark thing very close by. It was a seal. I never saw a seal before in the sea and I live next to the sea for over 50 years. He tried to come out the water but didn't succeed, he tried and tried again. I felt very sorry for the seal, specially because he was in a part that is surrounded with big stone blocks, with only a small piece that is connecting with the sea, it will be difficult to find the way back to the sea. I had no idea what to do, who to ask or what, but I had to know if this was normal behaviour. So I called Kerwin, luckily he was at home and was able to look for the telephone number of the seal shelter. I talked with a very friendly man. He promissed me that someone was coming to look if there was a real problem with the seal but as long as a seal is swimming, it's almost impossible to catch him and probably he will find his way back to the sea. So we left and I didn't heard anything of it so I think it will be ok with the seal.

Way to go Aafke, I would have done the same thing. Poor Seal, hope he made it back out. Nice pics too!

Exciting isn't it? Seals are on both Atlantic shores - my friend in Delaware had one plop down in front of her and we have seen them off Long Island and the NJ shore. So, when you get tired of looking to the sky, look to the water! Great find, Aafke!
