Jersey City has a hatch or hatches. I just missed getting a clip of it! Darn!!

May 6, 2011 - HATCHING!
3:08 p.m. Update: There are 2 chicks (that just got fed by the female), and while she left them to dispose of the prey, it looked like another egg was in the process of hatching! Should be an exciting weekend!

I watched the hatches and third hatch with my students.  It is very exciting.  The fourth will come along shortly.  This is a special clutch.  I'll report about that later.

Still three and one egg at 9 am.  Athena is not moving off the hatchlings very much.  The first chick remains a wanderer.  It is continually crawling out from under her and she is pushing it back in.

Four eyases in Jersey City.  The last one hatched Sunday 36 hours or more after the third one.  I have been watching several feedings and watched Athena move them around.  That fourth one is so much smaller, much like Water St, that it is hard to know if it is OK.  Just thought I saw it move its head.  It is now in the middle of the pile and probably doesn't need much food before it konks out.

*****Updated 4 pm.  We think we lost the last one and there are only three.*******

Keep your fingers crossed for these guys, too.

NJFish&Wildlife may have some news soon about a recent offspring.  It is one that I got to see live and in person.  We are waiting impatiently.

I was again honored by being able to go up during the chick check of the one week old eyases.  Here are some pictures:

Athena (Mike and I named her and Linn P is probably rolling in her grave) gave it 110% again to get rid of the intruders:

Notice the emerging pin feathers on the one on the left.

One of the eyases is going to the vet to be checked.  I'll let you know the outcome.
