Woods or valley might not be the worst places for a fledgling to be. Fingers crossed.

Paul

I thought so too Paul but Ann said it's not good back there, lots of Coyotes and Foxes and no sounds coming from her back there.  Sad

If she's in a tree, she won't make noise to draw attention to herself.  Mackenzie spent a few days in a tree getting attacked by squirrels and crows until he figured out how to get out of a tight spot he was in - she may be in a place where she can't spread her wings out to take off and needs to figure out a way to move to somewhere she can.   And as nycbird says, if parents are relaxed then they likely know where she is.  Hoping for the best!

I recall Big Frank saying more than once that if they went down to the valley (deep woods) they'd never be able to find them and that it was the biggest fear of CPF watchers for a fledgling. I only hope Quest and Kendal know where she is and are feeding her. Fingers crossed!  pray

There are several parks/trails near there -  Moatfield Farm Park and there is also a walking trail known as the Betty Sutherland Trail (Park) -  there is a sidewalk or you can wander off by the river and make your own trail.  It's part of what is known as the Duncan Mills Greenbelt for those who want to experience some nature in the city.  I suppose to city people it would seem like deep woods.  There are old ruins in those 'woods' and due to the diversity of trees and plant life there it is protected.  The ruins are covered in brush, grasses, vines and all sorts of greenery there now so I guess to some it would seem quite 'wild'.  For sure it would be a pain to maneuver through but the guys with the spray cans managed to get through just fine to spray graffiti all over the ruins.

Not trying to make light of the situation by any means but the 'deep woods' comment threw me for a loop there.  Likely the two legged creatures there would be more dangerous - kind of like out where Pigott is if you know what I mean.

According to the watcher's, Q and K didn't even see Kimani go. Right now they are concentrating on Luna and Carina. They are not going outside the perimeter of DM  Still hoping for a miracle!

"Just when we had had just about enough, she worked her Back almost reaching the nest box ledge, and them at 9:15pm she fell and was into the air! Quest immediately took flight to join her in the air as Luna flew eastbound across the face of the nest building. During her decent, Quest managed to get under her in flight and bumped and guided her from beneath slowing her decent and allowing her to gain a few critical feet upwards and they both landed on a window ledge on the west elevation of 240 Duncan Mill road, about half way up. While not a great landing, (kind of like using the back of the window ledge as a stopper), Luna clung to back wall upside down hooked on the face of the concrete wall with a single talon. Seconds later she finally freed herself and fell a few feet to the window ledge and righted herself. Quest was right beside her."

Daughter like mother.  Mariah did this with Isaura when she flew back to the Kodak Tower from across the river.  It was her first day of flying and she was exhausted.  Mariah stayed below her and gently "bumped" her from below, giving her the strength to make it back to the top of the Kodak Tower.  Something I will never forget.  Good job Quest!   wub2

First rule of the fledge watch.  When you lose a fledgling, keep watching the parents.  Look where they look.  If they know where she is, and they can reach her, they will care for her.

Also, as someone else said, a downed fledgling will stay quiet.

Hoping and praying they find her safe and sound tomorrow.   pray

Fingers crossed.  Quest and Kendal might have seen her leave that morning.  I think the watchers arrived and saw that she was gone from the roof top

What lovely descriptions of the power of maternal instincts.  From Mariah with Isaura to Quest with Luna.  Perhaps Luna will have to do that when she becomes a mom.  She knows how now.

Both fledglings have in fact fledged and are doing very well!
June 20, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills
Mark Nash Reports:

June 20th -2013
Both Luna and Carina have fledged and holding their altitude!!

While I would love to give everyone a detailed account and blow by blow explanation of todays happenings, I must admit, even I couldn’t get it all in without writing a small book, but with 16 hours a day in the streets on the fledge watch, there is simply not enough hours in the day, and no time to sit around indoors on the computer.

I can only describe the days events today as nothing short of spectacular! The two young fledglings have clearly demonstrated their new found ability to spread their wings and take flight! Both Luna and Carina are both now actually flying, and more importantly, holding their altitude and looking like real flighted birds!!!

While they are far from looking like their parents with regards to having any real skill in their flights, they are learning very quickly indeed. Quest and Kendal have both been keeping a very close eye on the two girls as they have flown around from building to building while investigating their new found world, which is now being viewed by the fledglings in 3D as opposed to the 2D world that they were stuck in while a captive audience on the nest ledge.

Clearly, the young fledgling have become real “birds”!

While their landings are another story, (Oh my goodness, some real bumps and grinds), the two young fledglings are at little risk of coming to the ground and needing to be rescued at this point. this is in no way to suggest that they still can’t get into trouble and need our assistance as we have long since learned over the past 17 years while on the fledge watches, they are at least now capable of some sustained flight and able to escape some perceived dangers by simply flying away.

There were several tender moments observed today between Quest and the two girls as she fed each of them several times throughout the day - “beak to beak” on various elevations on several of the office building roof tops and ledges. Kendal is doing a great job in keeping the food coming in and is keeping his distance from his two daughters while staying out of Quests way as she does most all of the real baby sitting.

Remembering that his time will come once the fledglings have become more stable in their flight, Kendal will be one that will do the larger percentage of the detailed flight training with the kids, and Quest will take a back seat during much of this process.

A huge thank you to all that have joined us on the watch, as even I must admit, the 16 hour days are starting to take their toll on my ability to keep both of the fledglings in my view, especially now that they are both so mobile. If I only had wings myself!!

Sadly, the third fledgling named Kimani has still not surfaced and has not been found. We can only hope she will reappear.
Stay tuned……….. more to come.

Picture supplied by Cathy Kerr of Quest and Luna taken during one of the feedings today.
Great shot!!
