The Golden Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia.  They did a good job of controlling the grasshoppers and beetles in my mom's garden -- one of the first spiders I learned.

I would actually welcome one in my raised garden IF it would eat the %*$#!!! grasshoppers that are holing all the leaves on the vines and perennials!  Haven't applied any chemicals because of the three juvie mantises I spotted there a couple of weeks ago.

He's still here and he better get eating!  The grasshopers are a PIA!  I am Loaded with Mantiss, both brown and green.  2-3 inches already.  I hope NONE are in my arborvite (sp), as I have 1 of 15 INFESTED with bag worms - the rear has been chewed to sticks.  I have no choice but to have them sprayed - too much invested in plants and landscaping.

Mirta said, "don't worry about it, it is a beautiful and safe spider. It is a female Argiope".  Yay!  I just need confirmation after my brown recluse encounter last year :-)

Oh, I'm hoping that she eats a few stinkbugs - they are hatching - I killed some juvies and some eggs, but we are going to get invaded in about 2 weeks.  Bag worms, stinkbugs....   thumbsdown tickedoff
