Hey! I know the difference between an Osprey and a Falcon!
For those that don't know the subleties of the Osprey - Adults are generally brown, whereas the kids have white tips/dusting on the feather tips. Adult females are a bit large and usually have a brown necklace - Adult males generally have white chests, but not always. Most kids have necklaces, so it is very difficult to determine sex because they all look alike at this age.
Don't you just love their white stockings?
Very interesting that your guys are just fledging! The Tracys Creek nest will be gone by Labor Day
, so enjoy them!

Thanks for the info Janet! One more thing...after fledging how long will the juvies stay around the area before they leave?

Depends on the nest. My guys are in and out for about a month after fledging. Of course, they could be kids from other nests visiting and doing a sleep-over (Osprey adults are very accomodating of kids). Sometimes the kids fledge and are gone. Sometimes they go, but come back. Generally they stick around for a bit learning from mom and dad. Mom is usually the last to leave and the kids are the first. Just enjoy them - they are fun birds!

The first migrating Osprey of the season have been spotted at the Rosetta McClain Raptor Watch in Toronto. Last fall was a banner season for Osprey, with a final count of 211,which included a Toronto record 53 in one day. Truely that was incredible!
