For a bird this closely watched, a peregrine falcon called Island Girl has a way of flying under the radar.

Island Girl is being closely tracked by researchers who want to learn more about why she migrates such a great distance, from Baffin Island northeast of Hudson Bay all the way to Chile.

Island Girl is off the coast of Mexico, roosting on oil platforms.  Strong headwinds seem to have discouraged her from making a direct crossing this year.

Island Girl had returned to Putu safely for another year.
So on 12 November 2011, after 53 days of migration, crossing through twelve countries (Canada, US, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile) and two hemispheres, and flying at least 8,628 miles (13,885 km), Island Girl has completed her third migration.
What wonderful bird!!!!
