Hundreds of birds are being flown to a bird rescue center in California after being harmed by an algae bloom.  Their feathers lose waterproofing after being fouled by the slime.

I saw this news online a few days ago.  This organization is amazing!  They were also majorily involved in the bird rescues during the SF oil spill and Exxon Valdez.
