A Wellington man got a huge surprise when he found a duck stuck in the grill of his car.

Phillip Johnson said he was driving on State Highway 1, near Levin when two ducks came onto the road.

He braked in the 100km/h zone, but was not able to avoid them and heard a thump.

He saw one walking in the rear view mirror and thought the other had flown away, Mr Phillips told the Dominion Post.

The next day, he went to check the car for damage.

"I saw some feathers, then I saw the whole duck was still there, and it was still alive. I was surprised more than anything, then concerned about how badly was it damaged."

It looked like the grill had bent with the duck going straight in, he says.

"It was just sitting there looking at me the way ducks do. It was quite curious."

He drove to a vet, who accompanied him to a panel beater.

The panel beater bent the grill back to free the bird, which went straight to a puddle of water.

Vet Allan Probert says the duck suffered bruising and a damaged wing.

He expected she would make a full recovery.

"It's one of the most unusual cases I have come across."

He would release the duck at Zealandia ecosanctuary when it recovered.

Panel beater???  Had to look that one up!

"A panel beater is a term used in some Commonwealth countries to describe a person who repairs vehicle bodies back to their factory state after having been damaged (e.g., after being involved in a collision).  In the USA the same job is done by an auto body mechanic". Panel beater is SO much more descriptive Smiley

Panel beater? When I visit Ireland each year, I see this kind of business
advertised everywhere. But I had my Irish family roaring with laughter when I
told them we call this place of business a collision shop. They had a mental
picture of someone going into a store and buying an auto accident!
