Ailing peregrine falcon stolen in Rancho Cordova, owner says

The owner of a stolen peregrine falcon is appealing to the public to be on the lookout for the banded bird, taken from a truck in Rancho Cordova overnight.

"Someone stole it from the car in the pet carrier, almost for sure without knowing what they had," said Martin Stiasny of Reno.

Stiasny had brought the bird to Roseville for surgery on its feet and was unable to return last night because of snow on Interstate 80.

The bird, about a year old, was hooded and its feet are wrapped, but it may not survive without its antibiotics, according to staff at the Bird and Pet Clinic of Roseville, where veterinarian Victoria Joseph operated on the bird.

"It just had pretty big surgery," Stiasny said. "It cannot take care of itself."

Stiasny breeds birds for falconry and abatement of pest birds near airports.

He is hoping whoever took the bird will leave it where it can be found and reported to animal services authorities.

Stolen peregrine falcon found safe in Davis

A peregrine falcon stolen in Rancho Cordova has been recovered in good condition.

The bird - in need of antibiotics because of recent foot surgery - had been taken from a car that was parked overnight Thursday while the falcon's owner waited for freeways to clear so he could drive back home to Reno.

It was in a pet carrier, hooded and with its feet wrapped.


"It got found somewhere in a Dumpster   and some people turned it in to a veterinary clinic in Davis," said Martin Stiasny, the bird's breeder and owner. 

"Supposedly the bird is in good condition," he added.

The bird will be taken to the Roseville bird specialist clinic, where it had been treated for a foot infection.

Stiasny hopes to get the bird back Monday and return to Reno.
