Snowy owls' visit causing stir with birders MA

There's been a surge in snowy owl sightings across the nation, and on the North Shore, and biologists believe the thanks goes to lemmings, those hapless little creatures known for jumping en masse off cliffs.

Its been a great year all over. Here in Ontario Canada,we see Snowys every winter, but we all really enjoy irruptive years like this. What an opportunity!!
I saw the documentary that showed actual footage of the contraption which Disney made to fling the lemmings off the cliff. It resembled a turn table. When the lemmings which were herded towards the edge stood on it fling off the cliff they went, with camera below to show it shooting off the cliff. I cant believe anyone thought that was a good idea.
What people must remember, especially if a Snowy just arrives is that it may be almost starved when it arrives. It should be allowed its space to hunt without interferance. The birds we saw for the most part were well out in farm fields. Dumb luck allowed us to see them more closely when they began to hunt. One flew a couple of times low over fields before perching on a roof or such, so thats when we left it alone to hunt.
These birds sometimes make non-stop migrations so there have already been several showing up at rehabs starving. Lets hope they make it!!
