I was a little kid, but I remember John Glenn's first (and 2nd) flights!  I thank my mother, who only had a 10th grade education, but she did her best to provide my sister and me with as much knowledge, music, and arts as possible.  Thank you Mother - I AM Grateful!

Two names embedded in my head, John Glenn and JFK. Big talk about both when I was a kid. I'll never forget listening to my am radio and hearing "President Kennedy has been shot, OMG, the President has been shot"! The announcer was crying!!

Thanks jeanne!

I, too, am showing my age.  I remember being a little kid and brought down to the auditorium to watch a  tiny black and white TV, but we were watching John Glenn and it was exciting!  It is a "Kodak" moment in my memory bank.  Along with JFK's death, and the Beatles' arrival on our shore, and seeing the Beatles in concert at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium...one year before the famous Shea Stadium concert.  Yeah, I'm old.  I remember the second flight of John Glenn too, Janet.

Didn't read this before I posted to Janet.  How did this subject come up?     I just mentioned these in my post.    I was in gym class, sitting in line; sun streaming through the gymnasium windows.   Announcement over PA that President had been shot; followed by his death.  We all walked home crying; teachers and principal crying.  We sat in front of  small black and white TV and watched it unfold.  Reality TV.   That's why we are who we are NOW!  It was real then,  but now we show  "falsehoods" and pass them off as "realities".    Maybe that's why we like the reality of nature and the falcons?   It's honest, real, and unscripted?   What was that commercial?   Never doubt Mother Nature?   A butter commercial?   Help me out here...

OK, here's another one:
Cuban Missle Crisis - I used to get up and watch Walter Cronkite on WCBS TV 2 at 7 AM!  I remember Bay of Pigs, too.  No wonder I'm a geek!

Read with interest the John Glenn article. A great man who has led an adventurous life of service to his country. Seems he has no intention of stopping!
I do remember though doing a project in primary school at a very young age in the very early 70s on the early space flights,it may have been 2nd grade. I recall covering the USs early sucesses and Yuri Gagaron too. Of course being Canadian I recall even better the answer to the question almost any Canadian alive at the time knows Where were U in 72? Something I suspect to Americans is all but meaningless.

Of course being Canadian I recall even better the answer to the question almost any Canadian alive at the time knows Where were U in 72?

Let's see. Was it because:

the Queen Elizabeth burned in Hong Kong harbor?
Nixon went to China?
Japanese WWII soldier Shoichi Yokoi was discovered in Guam after spending 28 years in the jungle?
it was the longest year in history with a leap day and 2 leap seconds?
the movie The Godfather was released?
Bewitched aired its final episode?
Okinawa was returned to Japan after 27 years of United States Military occupation?
the Magnavox Odyssey video game went on sale, marking the dawn of the video game age?
of Watergate?
of Hurricane Agnes?
Jane Fonda went to North Vietnam?
George Carlin was arrested by Milwaukee police for public obscenity, for reciting his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television" at Summerfest?
the last U.S. ground troops were withdrawn from Vietnam?
the first episode of The Price Is Right with host Bob Barker was aired?
eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich were murdered?
The Joy of Sex was published?
a plane transporting a rugby union team crashed at about 14,000 feet in the Andes mountain range, near the Argentina/Chile border, and the survivors had to resort to cannibalism to survive?
the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 1,000 for the first time?
Atari released Pong?
Apollo 17 returned to Earth, concluding the program of lunar exploration?
the Pittsburgh Steelers won their first ever post-season NFL game, defeating the Oakland Raiders 13–7, on a last second play that became known as The Immaculate Reception?
the US ban on the pesticide DDT took effect, saving falcons and other birds of prey from extinction?
the Canadian national men's hockey team defeated the Soviet national ice hockey team in Game 8 of the 1972 Summit Series, 6–5, to win the series 4–3–1?

Where were you in '72? - part 1

Hey we are Canadian of course it was hockey! I was in 2nd grade, had a little transister radio in my desk and kept sneaking a listen for updates, and letting my classmates know. I was caught eventually by the tough disciplinarian Mrs Hayes. She took my best buddy Mike and I out of class and we walked towards the principals office(back then about the worst thing in the world that could happen to a kid) when at the last moment we made a right turn into the 3rd Grade class where they were watching the game on TV!  We were left to watch and I recall everyone jumping all over one another when Paul Henderson scored the series winning goal with 34 seconds left in the game/series. A 3rd grade bully type Peter actually hugged me LOL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1b58tz4oJc&feature=player_embedded#!
It was the first time professional NHL players from Canada played the Soviets.
