Metro train gets special passenger: An injured bald eagle VA

A special Metro train rolled down the rails Saturday on one of the transit system’s more unusual missions: saving an injured bald eagle.

Rich has seen several Bald Eagles on both the MD and VA sides of the Potomac while going over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge over the last few months.  This eagle was found very close to the nesting site, which is on the MD side of the river.  Another note/speculation about this eagle would be is it George or the female that battled with and led to Martha's death a few years back?  This is easily within that territory.  Note that there are a LOT of Bald Eagles a VERY short flight from downtown DC (and Reagan National Airport and Bolling AF Base).

Injured Bald Eagle Euthanized

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA)--The American Bald Eagle that was rescued last Saturday, Feb. 25, near the Metro tracks at Van Dorn Street Station has been euthanized. Ken Knowles, with the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia, who helped rescue the bird together with Metro and Animal Control, had been trying to rehabilitate the bird at the Conservancy's facility in Falls Church, Virginia.

This morning, Knowles told 9News that the eagle had such extensive damage to one wing that they were unable to help it and that it would not be able to survive. The Bald Eagle is a protected species under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

The remains of the eagle will be shipped to the National Repository of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Denver, Colorado.

Under an agreement with Native American tribes, the eagle's feathers will be made available to certain tribes registered with the Fish and Wildlife Service to be used for religious rituals.     Poor Eagle
