Hi guys, it is with a heavy heart the I report some sad news about the beluga whale calf, orphaned just a few weeks ago, along the Alaskan coast. Unfortunately, despite incredible efforts, skill, and love put forth from the Alaska Sea Life Center team and partners like Shedd Aquarium and Georgia Aquarium, the little fighter, which swam every moment with great hope, died late last night. Everyone involved knew that the odds were stacked against us (especially being that no beluga orphan has ever survived in human care), yet the incredible fight to survive displayed this little guy gave us all great hope. Every hour he lived, leading to a day of survival, then followed by a week, and than another, made us all feel that perhaps he was going to beat the odds. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. In the end, even though he has died, he leaves behind new experiences and knowledge that will be passed onto the next rescue of an orphaned beluga. While it is sad to see him go, all of us will cherish the experience we had with him. - Jeff Corwin
