Pictures of a redtail eating a seagull.

I was at Medley center and I saw the silohuette of a very large bird eating something on the ground. I drove closer and I saw it was a big redtail hawk. I drove back to work, got my camera and went back. the hawk flew into a tree and finally I got to see what she was eating. It was a seagull. pretty amazing!

yeah really. I'm sure that the poor thing was alive for a while as the hawk was eating.

Another redtail eating a gull! Is this
National Eat a Gull Week
or something? I hadn't known that redtails were able to catch gulls or even interested in doing such. Back when I was in grad school, I delighted in borrowing my roommate's car with its "Eat More Possum" bumper sticker. Great for dates and faculty-student cocktail parties. It prompted much conversation, but changed nobody's eating habits. I guess redtails are unlike people. Anyhow, great pictures.

Hmmm.....
There were a few other bumper stickers along that line of thinking, too....

This looks just like the reddish headed one we saw on Sunday in the tree nest to the old K-Mart building (see Carol P's pics). I have seen two RTHs together on the Ridge Rd communication tower, flying over Medley Center, on lights over the expressway nearby, and flying around St. Anns. I saw the male (darker head) hunt for small prey on the ground. This may be the female who likes a "gullicious" meal.
