I am currently vacationing on the island of Maui, Hawaii.  A peregrine was spotted here just last week, so I'll definitely keep my eyes to the skies.  http://www.anitaharris.com/peregrine-falcon-hunting-at-kealia-ponds-in-maui-hawaii/

Apropos... I have never managed to get over the fact that, when I was in Hawaii (at some time in the Jurassic...), I was NOT a birder!!! WHAT?!! (I did manage to sample a fair cross-section of Macadamia Nut Cream Pie, tho...)

We went to Oahu, Maui and Kauai a few years ago and what a beautiful place to go! Enjoy your trip-hope you get a chance to visit Haleakala! Amazing about the Peregrine being seen there-wonder if there are more?

Aloha, Patsy! How's the weather? Interesting that a Peregrine was seen recently. The bird book I purchased in 1998, while in Kauai, does list Peregrine Falcons, "usually seen in coastal and lowland wetland habitats" of the islands. Kauai also had many chickens that the locals said had blown over in a storm? The Roosters would wake us up very early with their crowing. Funny, Bobbie Ireland. I wasn't a very avid birder then, either! However I enjoyed seeing the Cattle Egrets, noisy Mynas and the handsome Red-crested Cardinals. Hindsight, I should have taken bird watching side trips from the yoga retreat. Patsy, have a wonderful vacation, and please share with us any of your bird sightings. Mahalo!

I won't be able to do much pefa watching, as we're here for a family Valentine's Day wedding.  We are the groom's family, and today we're putting on a "meet and greet" picnic on the beach, so it's time to get chopping, cooking and packing cars.  The weather is a bit rainy, but not too hot.  Lovely, really, and we have rented a shelter, so no worries there.  I'd love to get to Haleakala on Saturday if we have time and the weather is clear.  It's a dormant volcano.  I've been there before, and it's quite magnificent.  Home on Sunday.
