The Eyas is Here! The Eyas is Here! – 6/20/12

Introducing Beauty and Dot.ca’s First Eyas!

We’ve all been watching the Rochester Falconcam cameras intently ever since Beauty laid her two eggs. We watched as she pulled them under her, along with an egg that had been laid earlier by Unity and so it began!

This morning, at a little after 6:00 am, while Dot.ca was taking his turn on the eggs, a very small wet eyas won the battle to break free from its egg. Much to Dot.ca’s and all our viewer’s amazement, a young eyas made its way into the world when the egg split in half.

Along with the newly hatched eyas, two eggs remain in the nest box. Hopefully, a sibling will soon join the first one. We do not hold out much hope that Unity and Archer’s egg will hatch.

After a year of tragedy and uncertainty, we have something to celebrate! If all goes well, there will once again be young Peregrine Falcons learning to master the Rochester skies!

What a surprise, that the first eyas would come on Dot.ca’s watch! But has Beauty ever hatched one? Maybe she did not know that usually the falcon and not the tiercel accompanies the chick into the world outside the shell.
I am very hopeful that Dot.ca will be a wonderful father and that Beauty will be satisfied with the arrangement for some seasons to come. [Poor Pigott – she will now get even less of Dot.ca’s attention – at least, I hope so!]

  2. BC Says:

Beauty has hatched two before. I think she let him hatch this one.

  3. kathy Says:

She likely knew she would expend a lot of energy keeping the baby shaded all day and took the time to eat and hydrate herself.

I think it’s wonderful news and Beauty and DotCa are wonderful as well! Congratulations everyone!

  4. Maureen in MA Says:

    Woo hoooooo!! Awesome news!!! 😀

  5. Alison Says:

It seems to have been a rather fast brooding (First laid on 5/16, second on 5/19 – 35 days from first egg to hatch which is spot on, but brooding usually only starts in earnest after the second or third egg and that was only 30 days ago). I wonder if the elevated temperatures of the past weeks hastened the development of the chick in the egg.

  6. Melissa Says:

I am thrilled Rochester has an eyas again!!! After such an unbelievable start to the season, this is just so wonderful. Now I hope the rest of the season is just as wonderful.

It has been a trying number of years here in Rochester. The joy in the last few years– for me, at least — has been Quest — hatched in 2008 from Mariah and Kaver. But to see this babe this morning is joyous. I hope she/he flies long and strong, and high, and continues the Rochester tradition of wonderful peregrine falcons. And fledge watch will be late, but during a time where I may have more time! YAY!

  8. Barb W. in L.A. Says:

Wonderful news! The little one looks healthy, active and has a good set of pipes. On one of Dot.ca’s watches you could almost see the furrows in his brow as he was so perplexed while gently attempting to corral eyas and eggs. All seem to be enduring the heat amazingly well. Would anyone know the latest successful hatch date for Peregrines, or would June 20th be a record-breaker? Looking forward to “pip” #2!

  9. Alison Says:

Since falcons have a natural body temperature of over 100 degress, a 90 degree day would not be such a problem as long as the eyas gets shade and hydration.

  10. Maddy Says:

I just got a quick look at the second egg and it looked like there was a pip hole. It was a VERY quick look… just hoping.

  11. Alison Says:

So the consensus is: “we’re done with one” ? The only eyas is getting food for two when Dot.ca is doing the feeding.

  12. Kris G. Says:

With all that Beauty’s been through this year-the battle with Unity resulting in her going to rehab for her injuries, her return to Rochester to find no Archer and a strange tiercel (DC) swooping at her for days and then the foot injury-this baby is such a gift! Although it would have been nice for there to be two this year, I’m thrilled that we have this little one!
