Fledge Watch- Sue & Al- Monday, July 2- 10:30am- 2:30pm
My husband Al and I arrived at the bridge on a beautiful morning and a quick call on the radio brought us to the observation deck, where we found Carol P, Dana, Joyce and Joyce from Ottawa. Two juvies were flying around the gorge, sometimes right in front of us. Mariah was watching from the shady tree.
Shortly after we arrived, they decided to land under the bridge and took a short rest. We used this time to admire the Falls and watch Great Blue Herons hunting for lunch in the river below. Since it was fairly quiet, we decided to go have lunch at Jimmy Macs and sat in the nearest corner of the balcony so we could keep an eye on any action. During the incredibly long wait for our lunch, we saw the regular lunch watchers come out. Two of the juvies took a quick flight around and landed back into the shady tree. When we finally made it back out onto the bridge, all four girls came out and played talon tag, which I’ve only seen a few times. It’s so exciting to watch them and pretty amazing that they’re maneuvering that well with so little experience. Mariah or Kaver flew in and landed on the gorge wall. Carol saw food in one of the juvie’s talons, which started a lot of loud kakking! Two of the girls landed halfway down on the gorge wall on the other side of a grassy area, so we couldn’t see them from where we were standing. Just before we left, a juvie flew by the gorge wall and I happened to see with my binoculars that she dropped something onto the rocky beach area below. She circled around a few times and then I guess she gave up trying to pick it back up.
My husband took several pictures with our digital camera, with which we still need a lot of practice. Most of the pictures of the girls were too dark or blurry to see, but the photos of the Falls came out pretty well. This is also my first time creating an album and I must have missed the instructions for adding captions to the pictures, for which I apologize.
