2014 Was a Successful Year for the Rochester Falcons!

If you’ve been following the RFalconcam Falcon Watch Blog, you know that all four of the young falcons that hatched on top of the Times Square Building have fledged successfully. Nor’Easter, Tesh, Mercury and Nettie have left the area. We wish them well as they begin their journey and we hope to hear about them in the future.

We would like to thank all the folks that came out to help with the fledge watch this year. To keep an eye on the young Peregrine Falcons as they took their first flights and trained with their parents, Beauty and Dot.ca.

There were a few anxious moments, including a premature fledge when a strong gust of wind swept Tesh off of the wall near the nest box. She ended up on a low awning above the sidewalk on the corner of Main St and Exchange. The Rochester Falcon Watchers gathered to surround the area and keep her safe until she was strong enough to fly again. When she did take off, she gained altitude and landed on top of a taller building where she remained for the evening. The next morning Tesh was off and flying well, eventually making her way back to the nest box and her family.

We had more good news, this time from Syracuse, NY. Pigott, who had been hanging out for the last few years on a building south of downtown Rochester, was positively ID’d as the new female at the Syracuse nest site. She left Rochester in March and it didn’t take her long to find a new territory and mate. We were thrilled to hear that she successfully raised a daughter.

2014 was a very successful year for the Rochester Falcons!

The following is from June Summers.

Thank you to the Falcon Watchers for putting in thousands of hours tracking the Peregrine Falcons, fledglings and those falcons just passing through. It’s amazing to learn the number of falcons that pass through Rochester on migration that our Falcon Watchers find and often identify by the band numbers. The Falcon Watchers are great ambassadors to the public for the falcons and GVAS. They are frequently asked what they are watching with binoculars. Their reply is always, “Peregrine Falcons.”

For the entire season I’ve been impressed by the dedication of the falcon watchers. Thank you to all of you. Also to Shakey, keeping the falconcam working. To MAK and Carol for unbelievable photographs. So many people I don’t even know and yet we share a bond through our feathered friends. Bless your hearts and stay well.

the falcon blogs and imprints are my favorite thing to see everyday. Falcon watchers are the most dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure to read. Rain, snow, heat, they are there bringing the latest and greatest news and pictures of our Rochester Falcons. Thank you all! You put a smile on my face everyday!

We can’t forget when Nor’easter came flying in and the high winds drove him into the wall hard on the same day Tesh accidently fledged! We worried for days about his injured, drooping wing but between Nettie and Beauty keeping him company, he stayed put, thankfully healed and flew well again! We also worried about dear Nettie, who also appeared to have some kind of injury but, after a few days rest, also flew strong once again. I also want to thank all the dedicated people who put in so many watch hours on the ground (can’t forget the home watchers too), Shaky for keeping the Forum and cameras running, MAK and Carol for their daily watch reports and pics, Netsville, GVAS and last, but not least, Beauty and DC for another super year of parenting! 2014 was a great Falcon year in Rochester!

    Hi,
just wanted to let you know that Pigott and new mate (currently being called “Georgeous George” are doing well in Syracuse! I work in the building where Pigott calls home! I have spotted both of them (George, mostly) beginning in early Sept 2014. By the way, these two are the first Peregrines that I have ever encountered! Thanks for sharing Pigott with us, Rochester!

  6. Carol P. Says:

Hi John! You are most welcome! When Pigott was no longer seen here, the Rochester Watchers feared the worse. We were happy to hear that she was alive and well in Syracuse. When we heard she had a mate and had laid an egg in the nest box there and then raised a young one given the name Barb, we were so eggstatic! Thanks for helping to keep an eye on her and her mate. We expect to see many reports and pictures in the future. 🙂

Oh, and don’t be surprised to see us there now and then. If you see people with binocs and cameras, come say hello!
