A question: We so often see one of the adults refusing to leave the eggs, resulting in a stand-off with the other. Any reasons for this? I am sure there is the fact that they are protecting their genes, but it is amusing (if that is the word) to watch them stare each other down. Ta!

I find it interesting that it is mostly one-sided. The female stays on the eggs for as long as she wants. The male does not approach the eggs until she has left. When she returns at the time of her choosing, she expects him to leave even if he is not ready.

Thanks, Shaky. I would love to understand the "psychology" behind this. As far as I have noted, it is DC who is more reluctant to leave. Yes? No? Maybe so???

Very interesting observation, Shaky. And that certainly is what happens.
