I find it interesting that it is mostly one-sided. The female stays on the eggs for as long as she wants. The male does not approach the eggs until she has left. When she returns at the time of her choosing, she expects him to leave even if he is not ready.

Thanks, Shaky. I would love to understand the "psychology" behind this. As far as I have noted, it is DC who is more reluctant to leave. Yes? No? Maybe so???

The question is would Beauty be as reluctant to leave if she were challenged by DC.

This is how I see it. The female is usually the primary incubator. The male's job is to hunt and provide her with food during this time. He will do the same for the eyases. That doesn't mean that she won't do any hunting. She will if needed and will do more hunting when the eyases are older. The male will bring in a food gift for the female. If she's hungry, she will accept it and take it somewhere close to eat. The male will cover the eggs or eyases while she's gone. When she returns, he may or may not see her. Kaver was notorious for being blind when Mariah returned. Hd would look at everything but her. She would tolerate his blindness for just so long before physically pushing him out. Sometimes she would settle next to him for those long, classic stand offs.

If DC came into the nest box while Beauty was on the eggs and she didn't want to move she just wouldn't.

Yup...just yesterday. I always use a picture from the current year. I did tweak the exposure a bit.

It's almost the same as the one from 11:10 this morning except Beauty's foot is moving instead of her head.
