Sheriff's deputies rescue falcon from Irondequoit Bay
June 26, 2017 03:52 PM
Alert sheriff's deputies saved a young peregrine falcon from drowning this weekend.
In a Facebook post, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the marine unit deputies were on patrol in Irondequoit Bay when they spotted the falcon struggling in the water.
The deputies were able to pull the falcon out before it went under.
News10NBC says great job deputies!

I'm very glad the sheriff's deputies were there to help this little juvie. I wonder where he or she might have been from?

Baby Falcon that took a swim in Irondequoit Bay is doing well. Now training/conditioning flight in barn loft. Eating voraciously. Puts down a whole chicken leg at a sitting. Those barn posts have bumpers of plastic mesh attached to them.

Wonder why they didn't return him to his family? Hope they had more than one so they have something to distract them from the fact that they've lost one.

I must have missed something. Where is this falcon from that's so inaccessible, or don't they know for sure?

There has been a rumor of a nest site north/northeast from downtown for a number of years very near Irondequoit Bay. The juvie landing in the bay confirms it really is there.
I probably shouldn't get too specific, but I've gone on a few pefa hunts with local watchers trying to scope out the area. None of the areas suspected of holding the scrape are accessible by humans on foot. I don't think anyone knows exactly where it is.

Falcon progress. The Falcon that took a swim in the Bay is improving daily in strength and flight. Making great use of the Barn Loft that I realize now is longer than I originally posted at about 48 feet. Working daily to try and get the falcon to bait to a lure. According to feedback I get from falcon watchers it is not unusual for young falcons to not want to work if the adults still feed them. This bird ignores my efforts to attract with a moving bait and waits until I offer the food at a perch. It is very happy to devour the food when offered without the need for effort on it's part.
