The Veterinarian who is taking care of Jemison performed an x-ray today and the results are in.  Jemison has a break in her right coracoid bone, part of her shoulder.  Her long-term prognosis is uncertain right now, but there's good reason to be optimistic.  In young birds like Jemison bones heal fast,...

He is just the cutest. Prayers for fast healing to A & B's little boy. What a rough 1st year for them. Callidora is doing great. Hope he joins her soon. Daddy has his little girl, let's hope mommy gets her little boy, (if he actually is a boy) back. Thank you for the update.

I keep finding the glass half full and I'm going to believe that is true.  Jemison will get a beefed up diet of calcium, is very young and will heal quickly.  If he can be released soon, then the watchers will get an added treat, as he might stick around a bit longer to learn his necessary skill sets.  A little set-back, but ultimately it is all good.  Half-full, half-full ....

Will there be surgical intervention or is it too late seeing as this is the 5th day since the injury? This news is heartbreaking in that he won't be returning to the skies anytime soon but hopefully Jemison will be able to fly again.

Seeing that he is young, how long do they think it will take to heal?  What would have happened if they were in the wild, with no watchers to step in and help?  It seems like it is going to be tuff for him to get back in the swing of things, being taught to hunt by his parents. Will it be that easy for all of them to get back to normal when he is released?  I am just so concerned for our little Jemison.  She/he was doing so well flying and then this...how sad for him poor little one. ???

After watching him for hours on the northside of the Time Square Bldg, and seeing how far his right wing had been drooping, I was pleasantly surprised to see that he is holding his wing up tighter to his body.  It's not back 100%, but it is much improved.

Thanks for the picture, Carol-it's hanging on my wall now.  And once again, thank you to all the watchers for rescuing Jemison.

Sweet boy.  He looks great though and feisty is good.  He's still young so maybe his bones are still growing so that he will heal fast.  Fingers crossed for our sweet baby bird. heart heart heart heart

I posted this in Imprints comments, but I'll post here, too.  Sorry for the duplicate.

Our Jersey Girl had a fractured clavicle that healed on its own within a week and half.  In fact, it had started healing by the time the Xray was taken five days after she apparently fractured it.  She had two and a half weeks of quiet and lots and lots of food.   She had a week to practice flying in a flight cage while still being fed a great diet.

She flew out fast, strong and up and the family welcomed her back immediately.  We thought we could recognize her by her unsteady landings for a couple of days, but after that, there was no way to tell her apart from her sisters.

Not sure how bad the break is, but being young is definitely a good thing.  Fingers crossed here.

Just curious..how do you xray a bird?  Do they have to be sedated like our regular pets, do?  Must be tricky.  Great photo of J in Imprints blog. Thank you, Carol!
