As we reported previously reported, Jemison's recovery has been going very well.  She's been moved to a larger flight cage so that she can exercise her wings in preparation for an eventual release.  The rehab specialist taking care of Jemison says that she continues to be feisty and she takes lots of baths...

Jemison looks great!  I was so hoping he'd be healed soon enough to be released at home, but whatever is best for Jemison is OK with me!   wub2

That's the way I feel.  I was initially a little disappointed to hear that he wouldn't be brought back to Rochester for release, but I'm confident that the DEC and the rehabber have made the right decision.  Hopefully we'll be able to have a couple of people present at the release to document the event and take pictures.

It's a rite of passage when news of one of our young falcons starts appearing in the Rochester Falcon Offspring board.

Fingers crossed that a bunch of you will be able to photograph and video his release.

Does anyone have an idea if he would be released out of state (like Maryland or Virginia for example)?  Or depending on the season, would he be released "close enough" but "far enough" away from Rochester?

Haven't heard anything about how or where a release would be done.  Of course it all depends on how well Jemison does in the flight cage.   falcon

Jemison is just beautiful!  Wish he could have been released to fly with Callidora.  But she is really probably more advanced in flight and training right now and we don't know how A/B would react to him.  This is for the best but I do hope we will see him again.  (And that we can get more pictures of him in rehab/release)

if A and B don't recognize Jem and may reject him,
why wouldn't other falcons in other places do the same?

I can't speak for the professionals, but in other cases like Jemison's I have read about, they generally release the bird in an area that does not have a resident territorial pair.  The released bird is then viewed as a migrant passing through to any peregrines it encounters along the way.  Generally, birds passing through are watched but not challenged outside of breeding season.

I read the update on J.  Will she be able to learn how to fend for herself without the help of her parents?  How sad to know such a wonderful start came to such a unfavorable ending.  I hope she can be free some day.  She sure did get the hang of flying early and she was sooooo very good at it.
It breaks my heart.

Sue-most of what Jemison needs to know to survive is actually instinct.  When Jemison was first injured, Paul Hamilton posted a research article showing that injured/rehabbed/released juvies do just as well as their non-injured cohorts in the long term.  I have faith Jemison will do just fine!

It still looks like Jem's shoulder is a little droopy but not sure when these pix were taken.  He is a little spitfire so he just really has to learn to hunt.  His flying was awesome, windows aside.

And we are so lucky he is alive and doing well.

And can I say again, he is absolutely gorgeous! heart heart heart heart
