That is such a wonderful idea.  I saw the picture of the woman holding the dog before he was swept away.  So awful!

And now for your history lesson:

Back in the Civil War, it was very common for the soldiers to bring their dogs with them.  When the soldier was killed and buried, the dog often stayed by the master's grave.  If you ever have the opportunity to go to the Gettysburg Battlefield, there is a monument that is dedicated to the dogs.  It is in a beautiful tree-lined section with Round Top across the fields in the distance.  Also, not too far from the NJ monument (I always have to honor our boys from NJ). 

I'll bet Pieces of History has something about this, if Paul is reading and if Mary is so inclined to point it out to us.

When I visited Edinburgh (Scotland), I made sure I visited Bobby's statue.  Oh how loyal our furry/feathery friends are.

I'll bet Pieces of History has something about this, if Paul is reading and if Mary is so inclined to point it out to us.   

I mentioned this to Mary during dinner.  She will have a look, but Pieces of History is based upon US National Archives materials, and a lot of the memorials at Gettysburg were placed there by private organizations.  I'll keep you informed if she can find any records.

Thanks, Paul!  It is a good and touching "Piece" of History, and of course the dogs and NJ are both on my repeat visits    I forgot about the private "piece" of Gettysburg.
