The-day, people celebrate de day wi' parades, wearin' av de green, an' drinkin' guiness. wan call st. patrick's day might 'av becum so popular is dat it takes place jist a few days before de first day av sprin'. wan might say it 'as becum de first green av sprin'.

Translate: St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say it has become the first green of spring.

Kinda just that... Happy St Patrick's Day! I once asked an Irish-speaking friend what to say, and I have used that translation ever since! Haha!

The Irish just call it "Irish". For some reason, everyone else calls it Gaelic.

Continuing the theme of the day, one thinks of Ireland and the Irish for their way with words. These few lines come from Jonathan Swift, Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. They are from "Verses on his own Death" and refer to the fact that he had contributed to the building of a local "madhouse".

He gave what little wealth he had
To build a house for fools and mad;
And showed by one satiric touch,
No nation wanted it so much.
