2 males and 2 females. Rio, the female was injured in a traffic accident, taken to rehab and released yesterday. I guess the injuries to her wings is what I see on her now. She's eating and flying fine. I was worried. I should always investigate before I get all hyped up.

Eating her food, the others wouldn't let her before. Sad

Have been meaning to ask this for ages... what is "hacking"? And why is it done? (Showing my ignorance... again!)

I saw that nyc when they panned the cameras yesterday. They had a lot in the box this season. The one falcon I saw that had red on her wings, I read it was red spray. PHEW!!

OK, I get the hack idea - but why is it done? Do they take youngsters from failed nests? Are the bird captive-bred in the first place??

Maybe I should have read "About our Project" more carefully... captive-bred, huh? Only captive-bred?

Not only captive bred Bobbie. They will take 1 or 2 eyases from a nest or nests that had 3 or more eggs. They usually Hack to bring the species back to that particular area. Some have mixed feelings on Hacking but usually it's a success. By the time they are 40 days old, they will remove them and take them to the hack box where they are fed, watered and released after about 10 days. No human interaction.

Thanks for sticking with me on this one, D-G. Without knowing a thing about it, it does seem to be a useful (and harmless?) way of expanding the population. 'Twould be interesting to read others' comments.

Well, were it not for the captive-bred hack release programs started in, among other places, Rochester, NY and Toronto, Ontario, there would be no peregrines at all on the east coast.
