A new update on Snow today: I am very glad he is okay.

Snow has found the roost tree

After disappearing yesterday afternoon and causing a certain amount of anxiety, all is now well.  Scott and I found Snow at the top of the usual dead pine roost/feed tree about 50-60 m away from the tree where we left him, in the tiny patch of bush opposite the nest.  It’s a tall tree, so he must have flown well to get up there.

Mum was sitting quietly in the box, but Dad was patrolling and chattering a warning call, so we didn’t go close.

I did take a photo, but it’s probably not web quality – too far away and backlit, but will have a look tonight.

Orange is expecting some harsh weather in the next few days, so that will be a further test.  These babies are so spoilt as they have been under cover all their lives.

Cilla (relieved)….back to the stats.

Yesterday morning, Swift spent a long time in the nest box:

Looks like Snow fledged in a huff after a tiff with his mom, Swift.  I hope they've made up. Peregrine Snow fledging under duress

These two have had a really weird relationship-look at the video when she was beating up on him.

Snow gets punished! This is a bit graphic for some but Beauty did almost the same to Orion when he wandered off to the wall. Is this normal Falcon behavior?
That was one feisty chick!  You could tell she was being careful though.

Snow update:

A quick update to say that, as of this morning, Snow is still up in the large old pine trees in the wood opposite the nest.  He is clambouring about and doing short flight bursts between branches, but I haven’t witnessed any longer flights, nor feeds.  But of course, I can’t spend all day looking through the scope (which has been set up in an office belonging to the head of school, who is probably unaware of its current use) and we have no external cameras, alas.  Last night Swift was sitting a few feet from him, so clearly they know where he is and I’m sure are feeding him.

At least the parents are no longer bring prey into the box as they did on Day 1, although they are still visiting and often meet up there for a ritual courtship manoevre (heads bowed, clucking).

When Snow starts doing longer flights, I’ll go and forage around under the tree for feathers to see if I can see what prey has been taken.  There is a lot of tangled understorey there, but will have a look anyway.

Cheers
