The last time we saw Zuzu, our flying squirrel, was nearly four months ago, on August 28, right before Hurricane Irene.  Had she died?  Did the loss of two trees make our back yard too exposed for a flying squirrel to feel safe?

We were delighted to see her again last night.  However, the biggest surprise was tonight, just an hour ago, as we were eating dinner.  It appears she has friends.  Zuzu is the small one in the middle.

How can you tell who's who? They all look the same to me!  confused Paul your pic of Zuzu and company reminded me of a squirrel I saw the other day running up the street toward me. I thought it was a rat at first but when it decided to stop on the sidewalk in front of my house I could clearly see that it was a squirrel. Any ideas what could be wrong with it anyone?

Well, my first guess would be a combo of mange and his tail was run over.  My second guess would be he was caught by a hawk or something and managed to escape. Time will tell if he'll survive, but I've seen some pretty badly injured squirrels do just fine.

I have 2 in my backyard who battle every day over the seed. Noisy little critters!

Here's one of our new squirrels, whom Catherine has named Cha Cha. We don't know the age, ender, or anything else personal, but Cha Cha has distinct behavior, climbing right into the seed cake holder from the top.

Janet -- these new squirrels might be family members.  Here in Virginia, the last squirrels are weaned in early December, so Cha Cha could be her kid.  http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1656/045.016.n406?journalCode=nena
