Domestic geese

Several centuries ago I mentioned some white domestic ducks I'd pass on my way to work Sunday mornings. I never could get a picture of them...until yesterday on my way home from the drug store.  Turns out they're domestic geese.

I saw them milling around in their driveway and pulled into a parking lot to walk out & get their pictures. I didn't have to leave the car...they had crossed the road, walked down the road & were getting ready to cross back over and go home.

        

Best guess is African and either Roman and/or Embden http://poultrykeeper.com/goose-breeds

These are great photos, Dumpsterkitty! The geese are beautiful. Are they able to walk around safely without anyone bothering them?

They're usually penned-same pen with the cow & the sentinel goose in the last picture-but they seem to get out somewhat regularly. The fence looks like it's seen better days. This is the first time I've seen them cross the road, but it is very rural so we're always on the lookout for something. One night I followed an escaped cow and her owner down the road.

Thank you for the info - I'm glad they are relatively safe, in a rural area. In the city where I live, they wouldn't have a chance. I don't think I've heard of a "sentinel goose" before.

Many birds will have one member of the flock watching for danger while the others are going about their business. I've heard them called the sentinel. That just seemed to be what that one goose was doing LOL!

I have seen that at the feeders one is on the look out while the rest eat.
