10.20 am and RM came in to check on her nest box.

From about 2:45 p.m. until 3:34 p.m., I was watching one of the birds having a meal at the nest. I thought nothing of it until I had a few views of the bird's legs and face.

The thing is that I can't seem to see any bands on this bird. I very much hope I am wrong about this. Looks like a female to me; powerfully built, broader head, longer tail.

Carol, you are the expert on this nest. Please take a look at these images and let me know what you think.

In some of the photos I see what you mean but in two of them I can see bands..faded maybe due to age and light.  Same dark hood as RM and same speckled chest.  Carol will know better but I'm looking at older photos of her and it looks like her.

In light of events today I spoke to Linda and asked permission to share some news that isn't public yet.  CPF is monitoring a new female that has been seen with Stormin at King St.  - she appears to be unbanded.

Neither of us has seen Tiago on the nest ledge since late November as we realized when comparing notes. Rhea Mae has been seen several times over the past few weeks and her behavior has seemed anxious at times but no sign of Tiago...he could be around and on alert so please don't take this as a he's MIA - we just don't know at this point.

My personal thoughts are this is RM - I've gone through the banded/unbanded confusion with her before due to a trick of light - but I could be wrong, certainly wouldn't be the first time.  That being said, if she's alone and there's a female around looking for a home that would explain her suddenly eating on the ledge and being nervous looking.  It is also possible the new female is venturing into this territory so we'd appreciate any extra eyes on the cam when you are able.

Hi Alison and Carly. It does look like Rhea Mae, but it's impossible to tell for sure. All we can do is keep checking. Thanks for posting these pictures Alison. I do hope that she and Tiago are ok. I know it's inevitable that they will be displaced someday.

Thank you for looking at these pics, Carol. There is nothing I want more than for this to be Rhea Mae and for her and Tiago both to be safe and well and at their nest. I have not seen Tiago for a while either, but it may be that I am not checking the cam at the right time of day.

10.50 Just came out of meeting and someone is home and gone before I hit post.  Looks like RM to me and it's extremely cold here today so she's puffed up!
