Margaret:  According to my research - I discovered about 3% of Tiercels have 2 nests, could be more as now we have falcon cams and watchers where we didn't before so the figure is just a guesstimate by scientists.

I am a watcher at a nest that has a 'bigamous' tiercel and it's been an experience I can tell you.   We've timed Jack one day going from site to site in 3 minutes and 47 seconds.   The distance between his two nests is somewhere between 4 and 5km on the ground, from the air I expect it's alot shorter as he doesn't have to deal with traffic and limitations of infastructure.

Good ole Jack, how many years has he been doing this now Carly? Quite a few right?

Re Carly's info re bigamous PF nests - I was wondering whether this could ever happen but thought it sounded crazy, esp with all the work the tiercel has to do with bringing food. Small passerines do this, right? Tho of course I cannot think of one now. 3% is not large, but still... those lads sure are determined! Keep the info coming, Carly! And thanks! Does this happen with other BoP species too? Is there any info about what causes this... other than instinct, I suppose! Fascinating.

This will be his third year, the first year he took over after TR mom's mate - Milton was injured.  TR mom was left raising 3 kids on her own and Jack swooped in to the rescue.

Last year was his first year being 'father' to eyases at both sites.

Apparently it has to do with territory for the tiercel according to scientiests...the bigger the territory the better!.  When Windwhistler - the original TO bigamist had his two territories, they were side by side and there was only about 2km distance between them.  Jack's territories are side by side as well, although further in distance.  Now when TR mom and Milton came in to their territory - it was only the year before Milton was injured.  They had originally nested elsewhere but that property was torn down so they were left homeless and came to the new area.  It is quite possible that Jack considered that part of his territory and perhaps them coming in - invaded what Jack might have thought was an extension of his territory.

In your case, it may be the same - even though you may be able to support 2 territories.  ARcher may not like the idea of sharing his space and what better way to keep it all then to take up with the new female.  I"m just speculating about Archer btw, who knows what runs through their heads.
