It Looks Like We Have Four…

Mariah feeds 4 eyases

It’s hard to see, but this is the clearest picture we’ve had yet of what looks like the fourth eyas to hatch. If you look carefully, one eyas is sleeping at the left, and there are three open beaks in the group to the right. Based on the fact that all the eyases appear to be feeding and they all have fluffy dry feathers, the fourth eyas likely hatched earlier in the morning. Most certainly it was well before the Falconcam cameras captured this shot just before 1:00 this afternoon.

Mariah’s being spending a lot of time covering the hatchlings so getting a clear look isn’t easy, but if you keep watching the Falconcam you may be able to get a good look at all of the eyases!

I think the 5th egg is hatching as I watch the webcams – not sure, but what used to be an egg now looks like wet feathers. Wishful thinking ? 12:18 p.m. WA St.

I didn’t get a chance to write until now, but I wanted to report on an observation from Friday morning. I was walking into work from Lot C between State St. and Frontier Field when I heard “falcon sounds” from overhead. I looked around and saw two falcons going after a third. The attack was over the High Falls parking garage. I’ll assume the two falcons were Mariah and Kaver attacking an intruder to protect their young. They would alternate swooping in on the intruder. The intruder would fly some, then stop and prepare a defensive position for Mariah’s or Kaver’s next attack. The battle moved from over the garage to over the Kodak parking lot. They continued the “dogfight” over Frontier Field. As they moved further away, one of the attackers/defenders left the battle and soared back to the Kodak tower. With wings out and steady, they used the breeze that morning to almost hover in front of the nest box.

I remember from the spring that Mariah and Kavar fought off an intruder. Perhaps it was the same one Friday morning.
