New Guy or Step Dad or …? – 6/11/25

I know that many of you have questioned why our new male hasn’t been given a new name yet. The reason is that the Rochester Falcon Watchers wanted to wait for our three boys to successfully fledge. Which has now happened.

NG has done an incredible job helping Nova raise her and Neander’s sons. We couldn’t have asked for a better partner for our Nova. She seems to have accepted him and we’ve witnessed them bonding. Zephyrus, Anders and Denali know him as dad.

For all the hard work the Rochester Falcon Watchers do, they will be given the honor of choosing a name for our new dad.

We’ll let you know when we’ve decided. Stay tuned!

Engie (NG) is my suggestion for the New Guy!

Anything that honors the functional original name and his dedication to learning all about his job.
P.S. I want all watchers to be informed that the juvie falcon that was noted to be pecking at a wire on 6/10/25 at 1:50 pm was actually trying to free himself- his talon was caught through the cable. The footage showed that at first he struggled off camera for a few minutes (saw edge of wing on view,) His sibling arrived at that time for moral support and then he continued (camera was focused on him at this point) to struggle with forceful wing flaps and jumping up-( and some attempts at biting the cable) until he freed himself! I think he retreated to the nest box after speaking to his sibling excitedly for at least 10 minutes. Just wanted everyone to know what one of the juvies survived and also to inform that some of the insulation of that wire may be pierced. Didn’t have another method- should have let you all know yesterday while you could still view it. Thanks for everything you do for the falcon watch community.

    Hello,

Some time ago, when the eyeas were just getting names, I suggested the new guy be named Engee (Linda Anderson seems to be of the same mind with a spelling variation). Although the suggestion was made light-heartedly, I have given it some thought and think now that it may be a fair transition name that reflects his stages of importance in Rochester’s Peregrine world.

First, he was a new male, then a confirmed new guy on the scene, then he became the New Guy, and then NG as he assumed more duties and became an important part of this clutch’s survival. New Guy, or NG is how anyone who followed the dramatic events this year knows him. It is like a pet dog that goes through names until one “sticks”. In honoring him as he is already known, it would be the final step in the transition to carry this through. While the spelling Engee has little meaning, In French, the spelling Engie, though often considered a feminine name, signifies “Good News” and that is what he brought to a precarious situation.

It is good and certainly right that your group has the privilege of choosing the name, and it will be a fitting name no matter what you choose. Thanks for being good sports about letting people weigh in, but at the end of the day, no one is more invested in getting it right than you folks are. Thanks!

I agree that the watchers be the ones to decide. They are out there in all weather, updating us in the Bathrobe Brigade on the goings on and ready for any emergency (which we thankfully have not had for a couple of seasons).

Nevertheless I do have a suggestion in keeping with the wind theme of previous adult falcons in Rochester, Miriah, (Cabot-)Sirocco and Kaver. There must be some kind of wind we can name him after.
Barber: A strong wind carrying damp snow or sleet and spray that freezes upon contact with objects, especially the beard and hair. Would fit for the Rochester winter if he is not the migrating kind.

I hope the committee will consider my suggestion of Endeavor. He worked so hard keeping Nova’s boys fed and safe
He should have his own name to honor his commitment.
