Mariah Enjoys Her New Mate – (3/21, 3/22/09)
Mariah and her new mate have taken over the Rochester city skies. They are very active flying around downtown, especially around Xerox, Bausch & Lomb, Midtown, and HSBC (which are all in close proximity as the falcon flies). They are frequently seen landing on Midtown. There are no occupants in this building anymore. You can often hear the pair e-chupping to one another. One has to wonder if Mariah and her mate plan on taking up residency and raising a family there.
Here are two watch albums of Mariah and her new tiercel from last weekend – Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Good news – on Thursday 3/26, one of the local falcon watchers who works downtown, witnessed Mariah and the tiercel mating on top of HSBC (across the street from Midtown).

Wouldn’t it be great to identify the little guy so we could stop referring to him as “the tiercel”? I suppose we could just call him “Mr. T.” for now. 🙂

Midtown is set to be imploded at the end of October – beginning of September.

Does anyone involved with the PAETEC project know about Mariah and the whole FalconWatch community?

Maureen – No ID on the Tiercel as yet, but with the number of local watchers on the lookout, hopefully we will know soon.
Joan – The watchers are referring to Mariah’s new mate as “Nubo” for now – it’s short for Nouveau (New) Beau.

At least the implosion is set for after fledging season…

So does this mean that we (online) won’t be able to ‘watch’ online this year… if no one is occupying the nesting box yet ? It’s getting to be to late isn’t it ? = /

They located Zephyr – “Z-Man” for those who find the yahoo deal confusing:

Yes, Jennie, if Mariah decides to lay her eggs on a site (there are two to choose from, we are only seeing one now) without a camera we will not be watching, only reading. And yes, it is late for Rochester, but not too late. There have been instances of falcons whose original clutch failed “double clutching” successfully, although the season was advanced.
Please remember, it is really about the falcons reproducing and bringing back the species here, not about us getting to watch them, as educational and as much fun as that is. So if they choose the Midtown Building and we have no cameras, it will stay that way until next season and then only if the building owners agree to a camera.

Midtown is being leveled Allison in October or November. So the hunt for a new nesting place will again be a repeat next year.

@Joyce – thank you! The temporary “Nubo” is fitting!

@Birdlover – thank you for posting the pictures of Zephyr! I am one of those who find the yahoo site confusing.
