I agree that it does look like an arrow or a dart.  That is awful if it is.  When was that picture taken? 
Can it be enlarged/magnified to show mor detail?

Whatever it is, it's tragic. Poor baby. Hope someone can help but it's quite hard to capture now unless sooner or later it hinders it's flight.

!!! Escaped Peregrine Near Liftbridge?

On Sunday I recieved a photo of a Peregrine Falcon that was taken at the liftbridge. Clearly not one of the resident pair,it appears to have tethers or a leash on. Local CPF volunteers have been notified and the word is out to Burlington/Hamilton birders to keep their eyes open for this bird. Please contact CPF with sightings of this bird. There is a good chance it is able to hunt on its own and a chance it could free itself from the gear,but also a chance that it could get tangled. Any further news will be reported.

One of the reasons I always worry about falconry birds. Maybe they are happy, but still...

!!! Tonga from MEC has been spotted in Port Huron Mi, USA.

With a huge thank you to Mark Robinson from Port Huron in Mich. USA, we have some interesting news about Tonga, who was produced at the MEC nest site back in 2003. After closer inspection of the great photo he sent into us, the band number was confirmed to be a solid Black band, 85 over H. Our banding records confirm that it is in fact Tonga from the MEC nest site, who was produced in 2003.

I came across a banded adult Peregrine Falcon on the banks of the St
Clair River, Port Huron, Mi, last weekend.

I’ve attached a cropped image showing the only photograph I managed to
get that shows the bands. It looks to my untrained eye that the band
on the left leg is black and contains the characters 05 (85) above
the character H, with no line between the characters. Is that
sufficient information to identify the bird?

I hope this information might be useful to you and your ongoing
research. If you are able to identify the bird I would love to hear
it’s story and perhaps write a little about it, and the work you do on
my blog

Jack Still Doing Double Duty

Most of January and February,the “resident maleâ€�  Jack has been seen with the resident female fairly regularily. The female has been around the old nestledge.  Recently,Mom was seen in some kind of altercation/chase with a large bird and arrived back on site safely. Stay tuned,historically,late  February has been courtship/mating time.

A quick check on the downtown nesting sites.

All three downtown nesting sites had two adult peregrines in view. King St. had both adults sitting on the south service area this morning. Yesterday a huge industrial crane had been lifting heavy machinery into the building.  Today, the crane was one street east, and kept the peregrines on watch.

Today, both adults were sitting on the east side of 120 Adelaide St, across the street from the Sheraton Centre Hotel.

!!! Could there be a second pair of peregrines in Windsor??

After many e-mail over the past few months, and with a huge thank you to Robert for his determination and persistence, it would appear that there could be another pair of territorial peregrines in Windsor Ontario. He has been watching a water tower at Benjamin and Hanna where there has been allot of raptor activity since October of last year. He recently sent us some video that he shot of one of the birds, along with a couple of observation reports.

While we don’t suspect that any offspring has been as yet, if there is a territorial pair holding firm at this site, (and an available nesting ledge of sorts), we may just see a new family in the works.

Hello again! I captured a little bit of video this morning… put on your headphones because the sound of this particular bird will probably better help you identify it if this is a peregrine.



October 2010 observation:
I don’t know if you’re aware of this but there is a peregrine living underneath the water tower on Benjamin & Hanna.

And if I’m right there might baby falcons up there as well?? I say that because this morning the firefighters were rappel training from the top and the peregrine was getting very very agitated by their presence. It appeared very defensive about its territory.

I know the one has been living there for at least 18 months but it could be longer. I’ll try to capture them on video sometime but they are elusive.
