Dana and I were planning on going to Buffalo early Saturday morning. I received an email from Sage (in Buffalo) Friday evening about the nest location being changed after the two eyases were banded at Niagara Falls. They were very worried that the adults were not attending to the young ones. Dana and I decided to make that our first stop Saturday morning.

Here is a album of some pictures which I took during our Saturday morning watch at Niagara Falls.

This has been a very tough year for our falcons here and abroad. Lady Gaga- I so hoped that you might be an educational bird after reading this morning's post, but it was not to be. Fly free, Lady Gaga, with those who have flown before you. Many thoughts are with you. "May flights of angels sing you to your peace."

!!! A hard story to tell
July 11, 2011 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge
Marion Nash Reports:
This morning we contacted the OMNR office to discuss Lady Gaga and what was to be done now.
With heavy hearts we are sorry to say she was humanely euthanised today at the vet clinic. I was with her until she Peacefully went to sleep for good.
I know in my heart it was the right desision and this poor little girl is now at peace.
If you see any of our Fledge Watch Team as you drive by honk your horn or give a wave to these folks who are out there looking after your Peregrine family I know they would appreciate it very much.

Observation for Windsor - Ambassador Bridge
Fly free, Lady Gaga! We've lost far too many this year...
Oh my, I am so upset. Thought she would be an educational bird. She was doing well 2 days ago!! Bless all who took care of her and had to make that heartbreaking decision!
Fly Free
I can't go out for 9 hours, I miss too much!

What a most difficult year for falcons and the humans who love them!
Well said, MAK!

As always, beautiful, and moving, pictures, Thank you, Dana.
Did Diamond and her unbanded? male self-select this site? This is a natural ledge, and not a nest box that was in place to attract falcons? Is that correct?
A beautiful setting, but these little butterballs are late aren't they? When will they fledge?
I know they were moved, but am unsure of WHY they were moved?

Margaret, they were re-located because the (cubby) or window they were in was deteriorating and not a good place to be. So they moved them a few squares down a bit. All is good and what a nice size nest for them.

Margaret they are indeed late. John S. (the official watcher and photographer for the site) told Joyce and I when we were there on Sunday that they expect them to fledge in about 8-10 days. He will contact Joyce when they do and we will be going back to check them out!

It is a gorgeous setting for the falcons.
Did you ever think, MAK, when you signed up last year to watch the falcons, that you'd be going "international"? Last year Rochester, this year, Canada --next year? The WORLD!

Hey Margaret. Sage told Dana and I that where the eyases were moved to, is the old nest site that the Tiercel used before. When Diamond arrived last year, she didn't like that spot and chose a new one. It is a beautiful setting to Watch from Terrapin Point.

Heck no Margaret! When I signed up I didn't even know if I'd be able to do Rochester with the limitations I have. I owe my going "international" to my friend and fellow falcon watcher Joycie! She has been very good to me and I thank her so very much!!! I'm sure I'll never be able to afford to go overseas but you just never know! As far as the setting goes I guess it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls one of the wonders of the world!

CBC News
A young peregrine falcon found injured last week by Windsor, Ont., birders has died.
The raptor, known as Lady Gaga, had to be destroyed after specialists determined her injuries were extensive and inoperable.
At first, it seemed the recently hatched chick, who lived with her family on a bridge between Windsor and Detroit, Mich., would fly again after a vet put two pins in her broken leg and pronounced her on the mend.
But before Lady Gaga could be returned to the family's nesting place atop the Ambassador Bridge, she was sent to the Toronto area for a more detailed examination.
There, specialists discovered wing fractures that had not been noticed by the Windsor volunteers who are working to ensure the survival of peregrine falcons.
"What we didn't realize was that a peregrine falcon doesn't show pain or make a lot of noise or racket or anything when it's in pain," Dennis Patrick, the site co-ordinator for the foundation, said Monday,
Further surgery was ruled out, and the raptor was put down, he said.
Lady Gaga's brother Spitfire and parents Voltaire and Freddie continue to thrive at the busiest border crossing in North America. The parents were first spotted on the bridge in 2008.
Peregrine falcons have been making a slow recovery since the late 1970s after nearly being wiped out by pesticides.

It has been quite a year! And I'm envious of the year you have experienced with the falcons! So ya neva know! Next thing you'll be reporting from the falcons that fly to winter in Chile, S.A.! (As opposed to Chili, NY) LOL.
