19-Year-Old Downtown-Dwelling Peregrin Falcon Dies
Two mates and 64 children, that's the legacy left behind by Kinney the Peregrine Falcon, who made it to 19 years old making him one of the oldest falcons in the midwest. His home was on Market Tower, and he was found dead with a bloodied chest on that building. John Castrale with the Department of Natural Resources says just because Kinney is gone doesn't mean Indy will remain without a male peregrine. "We'll continue with our nest box there, and what we expect will happen is that another male will show up and court the resident female downtown and hopefully we'll have another nesting attempt next year with a new male."
The most likely cause of death for Kinney is a collision with a building or an antenae. Peregrines are the fastest bird on the planet, reaching speeds of 200 miles per hour or more.

Such sad news about poor Kinney. What an awesome falcon daddy he has been. I began watching Kinney & KathyQ a few years ago, then realized there are falcon families all around. I've gotten attached to these guys. It is rough trying to raise a family and keep them safe when your nest is on a tall building in the middle of the city, but Kinney and KathyQ made it possible. This has not been an easy year for our Indiana falcons. Zephyr was killed June 20th, about a week after his 2 eyases were literally swept away from the nest box by a ferocious storm. Heartbreaking.... Let's hope 2013 will be a fantastic year for all our falcon families!

No no, not Kinney! This is just too sad. Poor Kathy Q. Wow, even the best of the best fall to tragedy!! I feel a pit in my stomach.
Kinney
Tragic! I've been on vacation and this is like Kaver all over again. However, death is also part of living and God knows that both Kinney and Kaver lived. RIP.

A new tiercel has been spotted with Kathy Q. We got a peek at him last night as he was right outside the nestbox and bands were spotted but he hasn't gotten the nerve up to enter the nest box yet so no idea on color or ID.

Ahhh, he's workin it! I think they like each other. Hard not to think about Kinney though! Thanks, I was watching for a while today but saw just KQ in the nest.

KathyQ
I will post pictures tomorrow, but a bunch of falconheads were downtown this morning and we saw quite the show put on by KQ's gentleman caller. I think he is serious and she kind of likes him. They flew in together toward the box, while she went inside, he was outside of it just to the north of it. He also did lots of flying while she watched from the nest box perch. We are trying to get a read on any bands - if that happens, well as Popeye said, blow me down. He is a handsome dude. Lighting made it difficult to tell if he was very white or buffish - tricky to discern. He looks very comfortable in the skies of Indy and seems to know the ins and outs of Market Tower - likes the ledges too. Good stuff and many falconheads very excited and happy.

KathyQ
Thanks to the group The Who, here's my thoughts this morning "WHOOOOOO are you? Who-Who, Who-Who? I really wanna know!" A pic of the new guy from yesterday courtesy of Duane G. New guy never lifted his bloomers or his leg to get a good look at bands, but they are there. Looks like they might be black/red for the Midwest band. Nice looking fellow if I do say so myself. So stay tuned to see if we can unravel the Midwest Falcon mystery. I also have a video to post later.
