Felix disappears
June 18, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Yet another very quiet afternoon evening. Felix disappears and has not been seen. Very to no activity in the area and nest ledge  from both Rhea Mae and Tigao I guess Rhea Mae knows where he is and is tending to him.  Welcome and Gurdy were only feed once this evening at 9p.m. just in time to go to bed. After the food drop the adult went to sit on the letters on the Hotel and the two remaining juvies went out of view.

Many trips to the Club Lounge to scan the roof tops of near by buildings for the adults, which may have given us an indication of where Felix may have gone. Both Rhea Mae and Tiago remained elusive this afternoon and evening.

Hopefully Felix will make an appearance at daylight.

Thanks to Linda and all the other Fledge Watchers at the Sheraton in Toronto.  This is not an easy place to do a fledge watch.  So many very tall glass covered buildings.  I do wish I lived closer so I could help.  Be safe Felix, Gurdy and Welcome!   heart angel

Another Quiet Morning
June 19, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Day 5 - morning shift.
I started out the morning thinking that I would be looking for Felix.
City Hall was my first stop and I found one bird on 390 Bay and one
on 130 Adelaide.  I next confirmed that they were the adults so I
went looking for Felix.  Nothing was visible in the 2 trips to the
43rd floor of the Sheraton so I concentrated in and around Bay and
Adelaide.  One of the adults moved to KPMG and the other to the
west side of Scotia Plaza.  They showed no signs of concern and were
content to sit and wait and were visible most of the morning.

Later, I met up with Linda and she said that Tracy believed the male
on the ledge was Felix [white tape].
  Early afternoon, Terry sent us
a photo clearly showing Felix standing on the nest box.  Yesterday
must have been our second male’s fledge, Welcome [green tape].  I did
a couple of ground searches as well, just in case.  Time will tell.

Juvie Makes an appearance
June 20, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

After so many hours of not seeing the juveniles, I finally spotted one, on the Opera House. I was  unable to get the band colour to confirm who it was.

7.p.m. Rhea Mae and Tiago were circling over the area of  University and Queen . Lots of trees at Osgoode Hall, which is one area that was checked earlier. The adults were followed as Tiago was low. A short walk down York Street and something caught my eye and I looked over my shoulder to see a juvie on the University side of the Opera House. Lots of flapping and running.  A change of position and the staff from the Hilton Hotel told me to look up. (they were watching an adult cleaning prey on the roof edge above me ) It was snowing feathers, so much that people walking on the street noticed and looked up. The laneway looked like it had snowed.

I thought the juvie would make an attempted to take off and fly to the adult, but NO, the juvie took off in the opposite direction and out of sight.  The adult brought food to where the juvenile was, and proceeded to chow down on the fresh food.

A short look around the area and the juvenile was seen on the upper roof level of another building on the opposite corner. This is where this one will spent the night. It looked like it was settling in. At night fall the other two kids were not seen and both Rhea Mae and Tiago had their eyes on the one that was spotted.

Let’s hope that this new activity and closer to the nest site will bring them out of hiding.

One Chick Doing Well
June 21, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Day 7 - morning shift.
I started out checking the Dominion of Canada General Insurance
building where the chick was last seen yesterday evening.  Nothing
was visible so I decided to do a ground search south of the Hilton.
When I got there I could hear a chick vocalising.  Completing the
ground search with no results, I went up to Sheraton 43 and saw a
chick on 150 York with both parents beside it.  Then I looked for
the two missing chicks and when I looked back to 150 York, the chick
and an adult had left.  One adult remained.  An hour or so later,
the chick was back on 150 York twice.  Searches for the missing ones
did not turn anything up.

Linda and Paul arrived before lunch and Linda spotted the chick on
200 University.  Unfortunately we couldn’t see the tape for further
identification.

Observation for Toronto - Sheraton Centre

It doesn't sound like the other 2 have been seen in a couple days. I know there's a lot of buildings and hiding spots but I hope they're OK.

Gurdy is spotted, one still AWOL
June 21, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

This afternoon after what seems like a long time, Both Gurdy and one male have been spotted.  Gurdy was seen on the roof of the Hilton and one male on the roof of DBRS.  As I wasn’t sure who it was I was watching last evening. Not sure who the male is. But that is a good thing, means they are too high to see the bands. All we need now is to see the third and then there will be no question. Seems they are flying well. The young male was fed around 6:30p.m.   As I waited for them they seem to settle in where they were and as soon as I settled in, they took off.  I only caught sight of one bird heading south of the Adelaide, but I’m sure they flew together.  No more sightings of any birds after that.  They are really flying well this year. I think because of the cooler weather and more wind.

 Noisy Start to the Morning
June 22, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Harry Crawford Reports:

Day 8 - morning shift.
I spotted Gurdy and her brother first thing when I arrived at York
and Adelaide.  They were vocalising and could clearly be heard from
street level.  One adult was with them.  One chick and one adult
were on the building south of The Dominion of Canada Insurance.  The
other chick was on the building to the east that has TD in it.  The
birds made brief flights between the buildings and finally settled
down an hour later.  The adult flew to the nest area and remained
there for the rest of the morning except for one trip to check on
the two chicks.  The other adult and chick were not seen during the
morning.

Two in view, third not seen
June 22, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

This afternoon/evening Gurdy and one of the males were seen in the same area as before the heavy rain.

While I kept an eye on the one that looked like it was going fly further south, three Mallard Ducks flew north on University Ave and hooked at right at Richmond. Perhaps they were heading for City Hall and the Jazz Festival. When this juvie scooted out of my view, I repositioned and caught sight of what I think was a second juvie.  Repositioned again to a higher elevation and found two juveniles on the roof of  150 York St.  And that’s where they stayed for the entire time.

I repositioned back to ground level, for a better view. One flew south and landed on the roof across the street, while the other stayed. Both adult were sitting on the corners of 130 Adelaide and paying no attention to either of juveniles.  Unfortunately we have not seen the third juvenile for a few days now. We were holding out hope that it might reappear today, but there has been no sign of it so far.

Morning Air Show
June 24, 2013 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Day 10 - morning check.
Around 8am I saw what I thought was an adult circling above York and
Adelaide.  Then a second one joined in the fun.  It was Gurdy and
her brother putting on an impressive air show.  They were vocalising
so loudly that you could hear them over the rush hour traffic.  When
I last saw them they were as high as the top of Shangri-La.  Way to
go!
